public releases hits the lab for some aural alchemy and to turn out its first release of 2017. a four-tracker from moscow�s phil gerus, scenes�or, in the producer�s native russian, &#1089,&#1094,&#1077,&#1085,&#1099,�manages to have a makeup that�s both peculiar and magnetic. the title�s a fitting one, every track feels like a vignette in a collection of short stories. separately, they�re self-contained, but a rich narrative arch is added when they�re sewn together. if there is a theme here, it�s of viewing the future through the dusty lens of the past, and each of the songs explores this in its own fashion. the kick-off, �ohashi sky garden,� starts as a hyped-up italo space epic, pumped full of swirling synth licks and sharp, tight drums, but it mutates into something completely its own when vocal samples (90s r&b?) and warm keys (prog rock rhodes?) enter. after the original�s brisk five minutes, the legendary richard sen�graffiti guy, breaks guy, house guy, disco guy, half-of-padded-cell guy�steps in to give it a trance-y tinge while doubling its runtime and adding a dancefloor-destroying hi-nrg coloration. the b begins with �naha swim,� a crunchy funk foot-stomper that might as well be an unreleased idjut boys or ray mang ditty dug up from the noid catacombs. fiery and furious, yet utterly cheeky. serving as a sort of coda to �naha� is �kiss of a kind,� a gerus take on 80s adult contemporary, replete with sleazy sax and sensual pads. a gentle nightcap to a zigzagging, antic 12-inch

london label spinning plates steps up for round three with the lesser known talents of nekhsa throwing down some crucial electro styles.132 breaks is an utterly minimalist slice of drum machine funk, and completely infectious with it, while some jan works a cheeky bassline rub into the sparse soundscape. back in 4 and bidniz are both just as reduced in their construction, but then its up to dj spider to weigh in with a pair of remixes that find the new york producer on savage form. his version of bidniz is a dense, cloying workout loaded with sinister sound design, while some jan turns into an apocalyptic techno destroyer in his capable hands.

late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini�s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem�s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

adriano canzian has by now developed a trademark sound unlike any other, a genre-twisting hybrid of ebm, techno, industrial and acid beats that has acquired nuance and influences throughout the years, aiming at that uniqueness he�s always been reaching for. confessions of a dangerous mind is a breathless, unrelenting march of a record, a whirlwind of classic industrial sounds driven by a hammering pulse and a shimmer of melting matter. david carretta�s remix smoothens out some edges into a mix of techno and new beats, then canzian charges on again with sick goates, skillfully adding noise frequencies to a goth background, before letting spain�s the plumbers close with their rendition of sleeplessness, marked by a dub-sprinkled techno no less belligerent than most of canzian�s catalogue.

claremont 56 has always had close links with japan�s vibrant music scene, with founder paul �mudd� murphy making annual trips for djing and live performances. it�s perhaps unsurprising, then, that the label�s latest limited-edition vinyl release comes from japanese outfit okinawa delays, a project founded by producer, dj and long-time friend of the label takeo.
some of you may already be familiar with okinawa delays thanks to 2016�s hana, a cover of a popular 1995 j-pop hit featuring original vocalist satoko ishimine. the singer is a well-known performer in her native japan, having released a number of acclaimed records on toshiba emi throughout the 1990s.
